What is Frozen Hash? Production, varieties and THC content

Frozen Hash is hashish that is made from freshly frozen cannabis and processed cold throughout. The goal behind it is simple: to preserve the volatile terpenes that are responsible for aroma and character and that are largely lost during classic, warm processing. The result is a hash with a pronounced, strain-typical aroma.

What is Frozen Hash?

Unlike conventional hashish, which is pressed from dried and cured plant material, Frozen Hash starts with fresh material that is frozen immediately after harvest. Freezing keeps the trichomes, the resinous glands with terpenes and cannabinoids, undamaged and in their original form. The entire process runs at low temperatures so that as little as possible of what makes the starting material special is lost.

How is Frozen Hash made?

The path from fresh material to finished Frozen Hash can be summarised in a few steps:

  • Freezing: The fresh plant material is frozen directly after harvest instead of being dried.
  • Cold separation: The trichomes are separated from the plant material at low temperatures, often with cold water and fine sieves (the bubble hash method) or by mechanical separation.
  • Drying and finishing: The separated resin is dried gently and processed further depending on the style, for example into a soft, pliable consistency.

The decisive factor is an unbroken cold chain. Heat and pressure, as they are common with cheap mass-produced goods, drive out the volatile terpenes. Cold processing keeps them in the product.

What does Frozen Hash look like?

Frozen Hash is usually softer and more pliable than classic pressed hash. Depending on the strain, its colour ranges from light to golden or, with certain genetics, towards violet. The aroma is clearly noticeable directly after opening and is typical of the strain, a sign that the terpenes have been preserved. An even colour without dark spots and a clear, fresh aroma are considered good quality features.

Frozen Hash, Dry Sift and Bubble Hash: the differences

The terms are often mixed up, but they describe different methods:

  • Dry Sift: separation of the trichomes by dry sieving, without water.
  • Bubble Hash: separation with ice water and fine sieves, the so-called bubble bags.
  • Frozen Hash: mainly refers to the freshly frozen starting material and the cold processing throughout. Frozen Hash is often made with the bubble method, but the focus is on freshness and cold.

Piatella and Static Hash are in turn specific styles or separation techniques within this field.

How much THC does Frozen Hash contain?

The cannabinoid content of hash depends on the starting material, not on the frozen method itself. Since 1 April 2024, the German Consumer Cannabis Act (KCanG) and the Medical Cannabis Act (MedCanG) have regulated the handling of cannabis in Germany. They do not provide for the free online sale of products containing THC. Under KCanG § 1 No. 9, industrial hemp may contain a maximum of 0.3 % THC. The Meshflash Frozen Hash line is offered as an aroma product and is sold exclusively to persons aged 18 and over.

Storing Frozen Hash correctly

Because the value of Frozen Hash lies in the preserved terpenes, storage is important. Keep it cool, dark and airtight, ideally in the original packaging. Direct sunlight, proximity to heaters and warm cars are the most common aroma killers, because terpenes are volatile and react quickly to heat.
